MUSIC’S SPIRITUAL NATURE – Have you ever wondered why your teenager has lost his interest in the things of God? If you really think about it, you may have noticed that this declining interest in God came about the same time he acquired an accelerated interest in his favorite rock or rap bands. All music is deeply spiritual–and it’s not all holy spiritual. It will either drive us closer to God or closer to the enemy–and this can happen whether it’s labeled Christian or secular.
Beethoven said that music is the mediator between the spiritual and the sensual life. Bach said that all music should be for the glorification of God or the refreshment of the human spirit. Does your teenager’s music lean more toward the spiritual or the sensual? Does it glorify God? Is it even refreshing to his spirit? You might find your child again when you help him lose some of his music.
