Most parents want to develop and implement parenting methods that help raise healthy and competent children. But where should parents seek advice on developing these methods and standards?
Our culture offers all kinds of advice on this topic, but is pop culture the ideal place to find parenting wisdom? Parents should know that they can build a firm foundation for parenting by examining Scripture.
Why Parents Should Build Their Parenting Methods on a Biblical Foundation
Parents who are believers in Christ might want to get a renewed vision for what a successful and upright parent looks like. Opening the Bible and studying the book of Proverbs is a great way to start this process. I also suggest reading Hebrews 12 and Deuteronomy 6. Unfortunately, the fact is, a great number of parents determine their parenting methods and solutions by following what is popular in our culture and among other parents.
Many parents gather all of their parenting advice from local education systems, the media, films, television shows, and pop psychologists. But the results of this approach often indicate that it does not work very well. Depending on the same parenting methods that our culture prescribes will most likely lead to some of the same sad results that we see in so many families in our culture today.
