Everyone seems unbelievably entitled these days. Adults and kids alike expect certain treatment, even when it’s not earned.
How can you tell that your child has fallen into the entitled mindset? What if there was a simple test to find out?
A Lesson in Entitlement
If you want to do an experiment to help determine your kids’ entitlement quotient, try something like this. The next time your kids are in the car, and your stomachs are calling you to a meal, pull into the drive-through of your choice, unannounced, and order a meal for your entire family. Don’t ask your kids what they want or how they want it. Then, throw that sack of burgers and fries–or bucket of chicken–into the back seat, and see how your kids react.
If they gratefully accept the meal you’ve provided for them, you’re probably in pretty good shape. If they start complaining, then it might be time to work on the virtue of gratitude. We’ll talk about how, next time.
