CLOTHING MATTERS – The expressions “Clothing makes the man” and “Dress for success!” would suggest that how you dress affects who you become. But what about “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” Trace Embry talks about that today on License to Parent.
I heard a youth pastor say that clothing and hairstyle decisions aren’t battles that parents need to fight, but I disagree. If your teen dresses in a way that identifies with the occult, gangs, sexual perversions, or other activities, whom do you think they’re going to attract as friends? Unless your kids have genuine missionary motives, how they adorn themselves is an outward indicator of how they perceive themselves. And if it’s antithetical to anything remotely Christ-like, your problem is far deeper than clothing. So stand firm! When your kids say “how they dress is unimportant,” ask, then, “why they spend so much time, energy, and money to look that way?”
