It is human nature to have tendencies to be a little self-centered. With children growing up and discovering things for the very first time, the tendency to be selfish is tenfold.
So, what is the best solution for curing selfishness in our kids? Teaching them to give to others, of course! We are told in 2 Corinthians 9:7: “Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”
God Loves a Cheerful Giver
In today’s world it seems harder than ever to help our kids understand the importance of “Giving.” Even in this pampered “me” generation, we can still impress upon our kids the blessing of being a “Giver.” It starts by our kids seeing us freely and cheerfully giving to others. Remember, what goes around, comes around.
In our worst financial days, our kids saw my wife and me write checks to others and to our church when common sense would have said “you cannot do it.” God transcends common sense.
So, along with merely teaching it, show your kids the spiritual investments of giving. It will make a lasting impression on their heart that will make giving a treat.
