GOOD CHARACTER – How is “good character” determined and built? Trace Embry says some of the answers contradict each other … today on License to Parent.
Unfortunately, the Bible’s answers don’t line up with what pop psychology and political correctness usually say. The uncomfortable truth is that building good character most often comes, not from our triumphs, but through our tragedies – our struggles in life. That means that, rather than sheltering our kids from failure, we have to let them make mistakes and deal with the natural consequences of their actions, so that they might grow in godly character and acquire the mind of Christ. Let’s say you warn your son not to skateboard without kneepads, but he does so anyway, and then needs five stitches. The deductible for the emergency room needs to be worked off – by your son – while the skateboard stays on a shelf until it’s paid. He’ll learn … and be better for it.
