AUTHORITATIVE COMMUNITY – Remember when you were a kid and a responsible adult neighbor could catch you doing something wrong, pick you up, escort you home, and give word to your parents that you’d been doing something inappropriate. That’s one small example of an authoritative community–just an environment where everyone keeps one another and one another’s kids accountable to a common moral center.
Unfortunately, in 21st century America, authoritative communities really don’t exist anymore. To give our kids a better chance at living lives congruent with biblical standards of morality, parents would do well to proactively cultivate this authoritative community model by being intentional about where they live, shop, play, go to school, and go to church. Giving other responsible adults a license to hold our kids accountable for their actions is a wise parental endeavor.
