Listen Now: Parenting Children with Special Needs with Steve Bundy
This week on License to Parent with Trace Embry… We discuss the challenges of raising kids with special needs. Our hosts Trace Embry and Rich Roszel are joined by special guest Steve Bundy, vice-president of the Joni and Friends Christian Institute on Disability and International Outreach. He is also a published author — his latest book being Another Kind of Courage: God’s Design for Fathers of Families Affected by Disability, which he co-wrote with Doug Mazza. Steve has a very personal take on this subject as the father of a child with muscular dystrophy and autism. Steve holds a BA in Theology and Missions, a certificate in Christian Apologetics, and an MA in Organizational Leadership.
Some of the questions addressed for parenting children with special needs in this program are:
- Is it natural to doubt and wrestle with God when you learn that your new child will have special needs? How might you overcome these struggles?
- How should anger over this issue be handled? What might be the cause of this anger, and how can it be resolved?
- If friends are giving bad advice or adding difficulty or stress in some way, how can parents of disabled children respond and handle these situations? How can they turn uninformed friends with good intentions into knowledgable friends, ready to help?
- What can we do as friends of families raising children with special needs? How can we gain a better understanding of their situation and help them?
- What are some problems unique to fathers raising disabled children? How might this affect their marriages? What can fathers and husbands do to overcome these problems?
- How should parents of special needs children apply the biblical principles of discipline? What sort of expectations should they have for their children?
