Creating appropriate and creative consequences for teens is difficult. Today, we talk about a healthy solution that has proven effective at Shepherd’s Hill Academy.
Beans and Greens
As our kids get older, it gets harder and harder to come up with appropriate consequences for negative behavior; yet, not to do so makes us derelict in our duty. One of the things we’ve found to be quite effective when a major offense takes place at SHA is what we call a special meal.
While everyone else is enjoying lasagna, pizza or some other tasty dish, unseasoned beans and greens can seem pretty bland in comparison. It’s substantive and nutritious. There’s nothing mandating your child’s right to a gourmet meal every time he comes to the table. And it only takes a time or two of special meals before Junior understands that his negative behavior is costing him and not you.
