Some parents are more comfortable than others when it comes to showing their kids public displays of affection. The reason why is unimportant. What is important is that parents, even those who shy away from those displays, make an effort to love on their kids. In public.
Why are public displays of affection so important to our kids? Isn’t it enough to love on them in the privacy of our own homes? What if those public displays speak to our kids’ souls in a way that words, alone, cannot?
Giving Your Kids Public Displays of Affection
You may not be the kind of parent who shows a lot of public displays of affection with your kids, and, if this is the case, you might want to ask yourself why. Perhaps it would even benefit you to overcome it. Like anything foreign to our life’s routine, it might even seem awkward at first.
If you can get over this, and start when they’re young, you will be speaking golden messages to their souls. These acts will be an insurance policy of sorts against the negative cultural influences of our world. This is especially true of fathers and daughters. As cliche as it might be, I truly believe that hugs are a defense against drugs. They are non-verbal affirmations that say, “I love you” and, “I’ve got your back.”
