Praising your kids is not wrong.
So why is it a bad idea to praise your kids for things they’re required to do?
Praise Less
In an honest attempt to encourage our kids many of us have come to a place where we feel we need to praise our child every time they do something we have told them to do. Even the simplest of tasks. However, doing this can diminish the encouragement your child receives when they genuinely accomplish something beyond the call.
In Luke 17:9 Jesus makes a similar point when he urged his disciples not to expect accolades for simply doing what is expected. He says our attitude should be, “We are unworthy servants.” That we have only done our duty. Building this humble attitude into our children breeds a sense of responsibility and helps squelch a sense of entitlement that seems to be permeating our society today.
