They may seem like oil and water; love, fear, and discipline, but they have something in common.
They are all good for your child.
Peer Fear
Although scripture says, “Perfect love casts out all fear” it also says that, “Fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” To reconcile these apparent opposites, we have to understand that nobody but God loves perfectly. Humans are benefactors of a thing called discipline which is comprised of both fear and love. Proverbs 19:25 says, “Flog a mocker and the simple will learn prudence.”
There is a principle in this lesson that is lost to our pseudo-sophisticated society. We fail to see that lessons can often be learned from the punishment of wrongdoers. So when the young and impressionable, or the simple, witness justice an element of fear will keep them from going down the same wrong road.
