PEACEMAKING VS PEACEKEEPING – Many parents confuse peacemaking with peacekeeping. A peacekeeping parent fails to properly confront their kids until long after their issues have festered into calamities. But, peacekeeping only prolongs the inevitable—all while discrediting parents in the eyes of their kids. Kids take it as a sign of weakness; which, leads to insecurity and rebellion.
The Bible is clear that blessed are the peacemakers. A peacemaking parent is willing to lovingly, but firmly, confront his child at every turn when it comes to his sinful or self destructive behavior. Jesus said, “I didn’t come to bring peace, but a sword;” yet, he is referred to as the “Prince of Peace.” The sword in the hand of the righteous is an instrument of peace–the outworking of being a peacemaker.
