You may know what your kids need to hear.
Have you considered that you need to hear what they have to say?
Hold Your Tongue
As parents, we have a tendency to be too quick to talk and too slow to listen to our kids. And like many parents, we can be prescriptive by nature. We want to fix things. And as prescriptive as we need to be sometimes, we do not need to be that way all of the time.
Our kids need to know that they have been heard by us. This gives them a tremendous sense of security. It is also a relationship builder. Sometimes being a sounding board is more difficult than having prescriptive answers. Especially when we tend to give those answers before our child is even finished speaking. Proverbs 18:13 says, “He who answers before listening, that is his folly and his shame.” Kids do not need or want shameful foolish advice.
