Most people view double standards as a bad thing. Everyone should be held accountable to the same rules. That’s only fair, right?
What if I told you that Scripture encourages a double standard when it comes to children? After all, do we really want them to be held to the same level of accountability as adults?
Why Scripture Mandates the Use of Double Standards
When you listen to many “parenting experts” today, it’s easy to think our kids should be afforded all the same liberties and grace that Scripture affords adults. But, is this wise, or even biblical? Most of Scripture assumes an adult audience, and the scriptural mandates and principles that pertain directly to kids are obvious in their differences. But, aren’t double standards hypocritical? No, not always.
Kids don’t have adult reasoning faculties, and, therefore, aren’t held to the same account as adults. For most kids, childhood is one big grace experience. This is why we have to train our kids to make the right choices. This way, when they do become accountable, their disciplined childhoods will be accepted for the love it was meant to be.
