BOARD OF EDUCATION – There used to be a phrase commonly used and seen in the principle’s office of many schools not so long ago. Sometimes this phrase would be written on the principle’s wall or on a plaque on his desk. Sometimes it would be written on the very instrument that always seemed to have such an uncanny power to keep kids of any age walking the straight and narrow. This instrument was a paddle. And the phrase so often written on it? “Applying the board of education to the seat of learning.”
At the risk of sounding like a right wing Bible-thumping neanderthal, parents committed to their kids and the public school system, would do well to risk ridicule by urging their local boards of education to bring back those–boards of education. The board of education applied to the seat of learning of a disruptive and rebellious few, occasionally, might just make a better learning environment for the majority.
