It is important for kids to learn that actions have consequences. This is why wise parents implement some form of discipline when their children disobey or act inappropriately.
While discipline is necessary, discipline without grace and love can be more destructive than it is productive for kids. Sometimes the best way to handle a tough situation with our children is with a radical act of grace.
How Extending a Radical Act of Grace Emulates the Love of Jesus
It is very easy for us to get into perfectionist mode with our kids in certain areas of life and parenting. As Christian parents, sometimes legalism is the result. This is a great formula for teen rebellion. So here is some radical advice: When your child leasts expects it and least deserves it—when Junior has totally blown it—try blessing your child with an act of grace that nobody could have ever expected.
Be in prayer for God’s perfect will and timing on this. If you are in communion with God about this, you will know the proper time and place for it. This radical act of grace will emulate Christ’s love on the cross and throw Junior a welcome curveball—bonding the two of you like never before.
