Is discipline the same as punishment? We argue that they are the same. Here’s why.

There’s a false notion in too many parenting circles that has its root in too many of today’s so-called mental health professionals. It’s the idea that discipline and punishment are two separate issues.

    The Mental Health Misconception

Discipline good. Punishment bad. But punishment not always, but often, is a necessary component of discipline. Our kids should know that punishment doesn’t mean we are getting revenge or that we haven’t forgiven them.

In speaking of God’s love and forgiveness upon Old Testament Israel, Psalm 99:6 says, “You were to Israel a forgiving God though you punished their misdeeds.”

At the proper time and place, any good parent might correct their kids. If God can correct His kids in love, why can’t we do the same?
