Do you feel that it’s ok to walk into a store and shoplift a cd or movie? Would you allow your kids to do this? Most people would answer these two questions with a resounding “no.” Why? Because it’s stealing.
If shoplifting a physical item is wrong, is it more right to steal something digital? What does this justification communicate to our kids?
Stealing in the Digital World Teaches Dishonest Practices to Our Kids
There are many things, like movies and music, that adults and kids can get free online, but did you know that many of these things are actually illegal? It’s important to instill honesty into our kids by making sure that we, ourselves, are not viewing or listening to pirated material.
No matter how minimal the chances of being caught, when our kids see that we hold to these high standards, it will help instill in them a measure of self control and respect that will carry over into other areas of life. This, in turn, gives us all a greater measure of trust in one another.
