ANHEDONIA – OVER STIMULATION – Offering helpful insight to today’s moms and dads, here’s Trace Embry with License to Parent.
Are your child’s critical, constructive, and creative thinking skills diminished? There might be a reason. In his book Thrilled to Death, Dr. Arch Hart writes about an epidemic affecting about 80% of Americans. It’s called anhedonia and comes from the overstimulation of pleasure, entertainment, and multi-tasking that takes place when using many of today’s digital devices. In the teenage population the problem is probably closer to 100%–unless, of course, you’re Amish. Anhedonia is a destruction of the pleasure center of the brain that often comes from drug abuse, schizophrenia, or depression. But today’s anhedonia in kids is surfacing when unbridled digital stimuli isn’t kept in check. If you think your child may be affected, try putting stricter limits on Junior’s digital stimuli.
