For many people today, entertainment plays an important role in everyday life. When we aren’t actively watching television or listening to music, we often have them playing in the background.
This is a culturally normal way to live today, but do Christian parents adequately consider the possible effects of surrounding their kids with secular music and entertainment? Is this entertainment harmful? Can it also be used for good?
How Secular Music can be Used for Evil and for Good
Is entertainment always as benign as it seems? From my experience, many parents seem to believe entertainment is harmless. At Shepherds Hill Academy, I work with many teenagers in crisis. I watch and work with these teens day in and day out, and I have done this for years.
So with this experience, I can give you this advice with authority; entertainment, especially musical entertainment, has a considerable influence on children and teenagers, particularly in pushing them away from their parents and their Christian beliefs.
Teenagers may be willing to sacrifice sex and drugs, but it will be a while before they let go of popular rock and roll or hip-hop music. Parents should try introducing music or entertainment options that do not harmfully influence their teens’ emotions, thoughts, or spiritual lives. These new options don’t even need to be branded as “Christian.”
All truth and all beauty is from God, and you can find these qualities where you may not expect them, even in secular music or entertainment.
