Social media is a tool designed to help people interact and bring people together. While this can be a good thing, too many parents do not realize the potential dangers of social media.
Most parents would not send young children into public places like the mall without supervision. Parents must understand that the internet is a similar public forum and take steps to protect children on social media.
Why It is Necessary to Protect Children on Social Media
Social media can be a useful tool, and it provides an easy way to connect with friends, family, and others from all around the world. No matter how far away people live, we can interact instantly on social media. Unfortunately, when the proper safeguards are not in place, social media can cause those who are nearest to us to become more distant—people like our children, for example. Like many of the tools we use, social media has potential for building up or for breaking down.
Our children need help understanding where the benefits of social media end and the dangers begin. If parents don’t give their kids any direction, they leave the door wide open for all kinds of destructive behaviors. Requiring total access to your children’s social media pages is one way parents can regulate their children’s activity on social media. Your children, their peers, and possibly some parents may view this rule as intrusive or sneaky, but protecting your kids online is an act of love that transcends the fear of what other people say or think about you.
