Kids from my generation were made to keep their behavior in check.
However, unlike today, kids in my generation kept their emotions in check as well. Does this seem to be the case today? Not really.
In today’s culture, many pop psychologists refer to this as repression.
Process Emotions Appropriately
It is important for parents to understand that there is a difference in allowing their teen to get something off their chest, and the way they get it off their chest.
It is not repression to require our teens to express their emotions appropriately. In fact, it is just good old-fashion self-restraint, something that seems to be missing in the lives of many of our teens.
If you want an emotionally healthy teen, you may want to start with teaching them how to control their emotions.
