In America today our culture is all about trends. Social media and the Internet spread these trends quickly. Before too long, everybody is watching, listening to, dressing like, or logging into whatever the trendy thing may be.
Not long ago, the idea that a child needed a cell phone seemed silly. Now, parents are handing smartphones to elementary schoolers. Parents must hold on to biblical parenting standards and not be shaped by every new cultural trend.
Why Christian Parents Should Stand Firm in Their Parenting Standards
Many people would consider stubbornness a common quality of children. But is it possible that many parents actually need to be more stubborn? Have you ever encountered a situation in which you are trying to defend your Bible-based standards for parenting? Have your children or your children’s friends questioned these moral guidelines? Are your peers or other parents often baffled by your parenting standards?
When you use the Bible to shape your moral guidelines for parenting, the suggestions of outside voices can often tempt you to water down your high standards. Some parents may question why you won’t let your son watch a certain television show, or why you require your daughter to finish her chores before she can visit with a friend. They may be puzzled by your decision to keep digital devices like smartphones, tablets, and computers out of your children’s bedrooms. This is when parents like you need to be stubborn.
Do not let these social pressures change the way you view parenting. Your friends may look at you funny or call you “super religious,” but children need healthy boundaries and limitations. If the cost of raising responsible, clear-minded, and godly children is a few sideways glances from your peers, this is a cost parents should be happy and willing to accept.
