Wise parents will create standards for the music they allow their children to listen to. With some of the language and immoral content in many popular songs today, it is easy to see why this is necessary.
But beyond the actually content of a song, how many parents consider how music relates to spiritual warfare? Parents must allow themselves to be led by the Holy Spirit as they discern what music is productive for their family.
How Music Relates to Spiritual Warfare
Life is full of correlations. Have you noticed a correlation between the time your teenager lost interest in the things of God and the time he or she gained interest in some pretty rough music? Take it from someone who works with troubled teens everyday; music is deeply spiritual. I can assure you that many of today’s rock and rap songs are not “holy” spiritual. You might be aware of spiritual warfare, but few of us see music, as Frank Zappa once observed, “as a tremendous indoctrination tool.” Our kids’ interests suddenly change, and we wonder why. We don’t make the correlation between music and their rebellion. But that is precisely why music is so effective. Its influence transcends articulation. If your child’s music puts a check in your spirit, it might be time for some new rules in your home.
