Have you noticed a change in your teenager lately? Has there been a change in attitude or a new lack of interest in spiritual things?
Well, music and spiritual matters are deeply connected. Maybe it’s time to check if your child’s changes in attitude or spiritual interests intersect with changes in his or her taste in music.
Why Parents Must be Aware of the Connection Between Music and Spiritual Matters
Our lives are filled with connections. Could there be a connection between the point when your teen became less interested in godly pursuits and when he or she started listening to some rather questionable music? Believe me, I have worked with troubled teens for years, and I have seen the connection between music and spiritual matter. I can guarantee that much of the rock and rap music produced today is not exactly spiritually wholesome.
You’re probably familiar with spiritual warfare, but do you consider the impact music has on our spiritual well-being? Frank Zappa once commented that music can be used “…as a tremendous indoctrination tool.”
The interests of our children shift, and we fail to see the reasons why. We miss the connection between our teens’ musical interests and their new rebellious attitudes. This is exactly why the influence music has on our kids is so potent. It’s lingering effects are hard to pin down. If the music your teen is listening to puts a ping on your spiritual radar, you might want to consider establishing a fresh set of guidelines for music in your household.
