Is there a moral aspect of art? Is art always good, healthy, and uplifting, or can it tap into something evil, unhealthy, and unproductive?
As parents consider art, especially as it relates to entertainment options, they must be wise and question its moral quality. This can help them avoid entertainment options that may have a negative influence on their kids.
How Considering the Moral Aspect of Art Can Help Kids Make Good Entertainment Choices
Do you discuss the merit of various entertainment options with your kids? Do you sometimes struggle to communicate exactly why you feel a particular entertainment option—perhaps one your child already enjoys—is not healthy or appropriate? Well, keep this in mind: There is a moral aspect of every type of entertainment or piece of art. Not everyone out there will agree with me on this point, but if morality is not wrapped up in art, why would we call certain pieces of comedy “dirty jokes” or certain written publications “dirty magazines?”
In some cases, a creator’s intent is the only thing that differentiates art from pornography. Creators have an influence, and they project their worldview through their art, whether they mean to or not. This can be true for all forms of art from drawings and photographs to a movies and pieces of music. With this in mind, parents must guide their kids with wisdom so that they will learn early on how to make healthy and productive decisions when it comes to art and entertainment.
