Listening to music is an important activity for many people, especially young people. Some kids may even shape their developing identities around the kinds of music they like to listen to.
As kids listen to music, they are also influenced by it. This is why many parents may need to start paying closer attention to the spiritual, emotional, and mental influence of music.
Why Parents Should Be Discerning As Their Kids to Listen to Music
Through my experience working with troubled teens, I have come to believe that the music children listen to can add pressure to already strained relationships with parents or even God. Though many parents overlook the influence that music has on the minds of their children, I think it can be argued that music can inspire or contribute to some pretty unhealthy thoughts and attitudes. And I’m not the only one who is concerned about this stuff. Plato mused about the influence of music and supposed that music should be regulated to some extent.
Johann Sebastian Bach once famously claimed, “The aim and final end of all music should be none other than the glory of God and the refreshment of the soul.” There is a deep connection between music and spiritual things. This is something that many musicians will acknowledge, even some of those who create pretty unsavory music. Parents need to be wise and discerning as they determine what kind of music they listen to and what kind of music they allow their kids to listen to on a regular basis. If a song raises a spiritual red flag, it’s probably time to find some different music for your family to enjoy. Being wise in this area may help parents avoid stirring up the rebellious side of their children.
