There is a lot to consider when raising kids. Parents work hard just to meet the individual needs of their kids and send them on their way toward healthy adult lives.
So as parents work to raise kids who will be a benefit to themselves in the future, is it worthwhile to consider how their kids can benefit society as well? Well, in some ways, these concerns are actually more closely related than you may think.
How Parenting Goals May Shift As Parents Consider How Kids Can Benefit Society
Many parents want to raise their kids to have a healthy understanding of good ethics and character. Should parents solely teach these qualities for the benefit of their own kids, or should parents think bigger? Parents often have goals for their children. They may want them to do well in school, have success at work, or build strong relationships. These goals are honorable and understandable. But these days, in a time when people are so narcissistic, what if parents set goals that would impact a greater amount of people?
Imagine if parents aspired to bringing up healthy and wise children that would not only apply these qualities for their own benefit, but also for the benefit the culture and society around them? We should teach our children that being joyful servants for the benefit of others can help them become better suited to have the right attitude at school, the right character at work, the right wisdom in relationships, and the right desire to contribute to those around them. Taking these things to heart can help build a better society and better future of our kids and our grandkids.
