Dads, if you are raising a son, you know how many negative influences there are in the world today. Voices from all sides will try to tell him how to be a man.
Unfortunately, sometimes American culture seems to have shifted from expecting responsibility from men to accepting immaturity or silliness in its place.
How to Be a Man
In the past, when a boy, adolescent, or even a full grown man did something inappropriate for their age or acted foolishly, it wouldn’t be long before someone would confront them with the phrase, “Grow up!”
Back then, there was an understood way that men and boys were expected to present themselves. These standards were even evident on television shows of the time. Dads in sitcoms were often hardworking, levelheaded and respectable.
Unfortunately, since then, fathers have started being portrayed as lazy, immature, or foolish in shows like The Simpsons. Men are shown as comical in many shows today and often seemingly celebrated as downright silly or frivolous in shows like Jackass. But are laughs worth showing such a negative perspective on what it means to be a father or a man? As boys learn how to be a man, they are certainly not seeing a helpful perspective from the television.
Dads, when your kids look at you, do they see a mature, responsible, and honorable man who loves them, or do they see more of what is already so common on television?
