When we think of consequences, we often view them in a negative light. Consequences can certainly be painful sometimes, but does that mean they are always bad?
While no one wants to experience consequences, sometimes they can be exactly what we need to show us the weight of our sin. When raising kids, parents must remember that consequences can ultimately have a positive effect on the lives of their kids.
How Compassion Can Be Shown by Allowing Kids to Experience Consequences
Think about all the things that the Lord permitted His people to face throughout in the Bible. From our human perspective, God may seem harsh or maybe even vicious. However, when we look beyond these hardships. we can see the bigger purpose of redemption. Jesus’ death on the cross is our greatest example of this.
Is it possible that when parents attempt to “rescue” their kids from the consequences of their sin, they are actually robbing their kids of an opportunity to experience an important redemptive process? If parents actually let their children endure the natural consequences of sin, these brief moments of suffering could actually save their children from deeper and more significant suffering in the future. Children will develop character through this, and they will gain respect for their parents. In allowing their kids to experience consequences, parents will actually show them great compassion.
