The love of a parent can be expressed in many ways. While sometimes love is expressed through kind words and warm embraces, other times, love is expressed by providing consequences for bad behavior.
As kids get older, parents must be careful not to neglect the affirming side of love. While expressing love through discipline is necessary, parents should make an effort to encourage teenagers as much or more than they discipline them.
Why Parents Should Encourage Teenagers Amid the Temptations of the World
Today, many aspects of daily life glorify sinful behavior and immorality. It seems that snares and temptations await our children virtually everywhere they go. Even children who appear to be on the straight and narrow may stumble into sinful activities, and when this happens, their parents will have to step in. In an attempt to help kids deal with their temptations, some parents may come across as distrustful or negative.
Because of this, parents need to be deliberate in encouraging and supporting their kids on a regular basis. This is especially important for the parents of teenagers. If your children are devoted to completing the housework you have assigned, you ought to be devoted to explaining how thankful you are for their hard work and how important they are to you and the entire family. Remember, your kids don’t have to do anything to earn your encouragement. If they are simply relaxing on the couch, take the time to surprise them with affirming words. If parents regularly share encouraging words, kids will likely be more willing to accept consequences when they fall to temptation.
