Sometimes consequences are the best teachers.

But can protecting our kids from consequences be a good thing?
When to Draw the Line
We hear a lot today about not being over-protective parents. We hear that natural consequences are the best teachers. And generally, I agree with all of this!
However, there are times when we simply cannot be protective enough. Would we not grab the car keys from a drunk? “But the drunk is impaired”, you say, “and the lesson too costly.” My point exactly!
Like the drunk, a teenager’s executive brain function isn’t optimal. It’s still years away from being fully developed. I’m all about natural consequences. But funerals, wheelchairs, or unwanted pregnancies are too great a risk when an ounce of prevention can be worth a pound of cure.
