Tough love. It’s something that no one enjoys dishing out, but something that’s beneficial, nonetheless.

Why is tough love needed? Won’t we hurt our children if we’re too hard on them?
The Benefits of Tough Love
Good parents love their kids, but love is a bit more complex than we might think. Years ago, James Dobson wrote about the importance of tough love. Many of today’s parents are creating fragile kids. Perhaps this is because they, themselves, were brought up to be fragile. Love was understood as only a warm, touchy-feely emotion.
Love is like a battery. Without the positive and the negative poles working in tandem, the battery is powerless. Love is just like that. Love requires that the negative, or tough side, of the battery, be connected too. We need to understand this when our kids are young. So, when our kids don’t see the light, they may need to feel the heat.
