Our society is fast paced, and information is at our fingertips virtually all the time. It can be hard to reflect on all the information that we absorb in a day, not to mention the years and years that preceded it.
Teaching our kids to respect historical knowledge is very important today. Children need to grow up knowing that they are more than an extension of a smartphone. They need to understand that they are actually an active part of history.
Why it is Important for Kids to Understand Historical Knowledge is Always Relevant
Because of a lack of historical knowledge, too many kids today think that their generation is the smartest generation in history. This is thanks to Google and the smartphone.
As a humbling reality check, let’s remind our kids that the smartphone is a device that was built on the knowledge and intelligence of the historical figures that they often consider to be backwards.
Ask your kids how smart they would be if the power went out. Those “backwards” folks in the generations that preceded them certainly had no smartphone to help build the smartphone.
What they did have was a knowledge of and respect for history to build upon. It was President Truman who said, “There’s nothing new in the world except the history you don’t know.” Smart man!
