We ought to be raising our kids to be adults.
When raising our kids, do we have their end game in mind?
Adults in Training
In other words, do we see them as adults in training or perpetual youth?
Nurturing our kids in the direction of their strengths and delights is great. But they should also be a delight and strength to us as we help prepare them to be the same to their future friends, teachers, coaches, neighbors, and coworkers. We certainly wish them to be a delight and strength to their future spouses, kids, and even grandkids.
Someone once said, “children are the living message we give to a time we do not yet see.” This means we need to be intentional about helping them develop their character. It may mean more books instead of video games. More learning instead of lounging. More face time instead of Facebook.
