Like most everything in life, too much of a good thing can ultimately become a bad thing. For the most part, there’s no harm in the occasional Netflix binge. When you’re unaware of what your child is actually consuming, however, major issues can ensue.
The media often portrays things such as alcohol, drug abuse, and even suicide in such a way as to glorify them. Take, for instance the hit Netflix series, “13 Reasons Why,” and the way it portrays suicide as a way to inflict revenge on those that bullied you. What sort of impact do you think this is having on your children?
How TV Shows Like “13 Reasons Why” Are Impacting Your Children
Movies, media, and music are all things to be enjoyed, but enjoyment can be overshadowed by sheer experience within these entertainment modes, and they are not all good ones. Like anything, when we over do things, especially when they are not healthy to begin with, the devil can have a spiritual field day with our minds and emotions.
If you want a disturbing dose of reality that makes my point, follow this link to the Anna Bright story on Vimeo. It is two parents’ heartbreaking account of their daughter binge watching a program on Netflix called, “13 Reasons Why: a Story of Suicide.” Anna’s story is not isolated, so I hope you will be moved in monitoring your child’s media habits.
