This week on License to Parent with Trace Embry… Trace Embry and Rich Roszel delve into dealing with addictions. Many Christian parents think that addictions such as pornography or drugs would never affect their families because, well, they’re Christian. Unfortunately, addictions hit Christian families just as much as anyone else. Joining the conversation this week is Dan Cosby, a certified addictions professional.
A few weeks ago, Dan’s wife Sharron joined us on the program to tell their story of struggling with their son’s addictions — how it almost destroyed their family, and how they made it through. Today, Dan joins us to bring his clinical background into the discussion in an effort to let parents know what they can do if faced with a similar dilemma.
Today’s topics include:
- Is pornography dangerous? Is it addictive? When do we know that casual viewing has moved into the arena of addiction?
- How pervasive is the problem of porn addiction within the Christian community?
- How do parents start the discussions about sex, porn, drugs, etc. with their children?
- When addiction does occur, when does a parent intervene and what does the treatment look like?
- What goes on in the brain as a result of drug abuse or porn abuse? How to teens respond to the science behind this?
- When a child is caught in an inappropriate behavior — viewing porn, for example — how should a parent react?
- If the tables are turned and the child walks in on a parent viewing pornography, what should happen then?
- Due to the amount of sexual content all around us, what safeguards can we put in place to protect our families?
